Affidea CEO at Executive GE Conference

Affidea CEO Dimitris Moulavasilis was a keynote speaker at the Minds + Machines Europe GE Digital Foundry Inauguration conference in Paris this month. Minds + Machines Europe 2016, hosted by GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt, convened industry leaders from pan-European industrial companies, European industrial thought leaders and executives from GE Businesses for a day-long forum focused on the digital transformation of industry and the state of the Industrial Internet.

Mr Moulavasilis joined a select group of industry leaders invited to present outcomes of projects involving the industrial internet – that is, ‘the combination of brilliant machines with best-in-class analytics delivering valuable new insights that were never before possible.’ []

“Affidea’s flagship Dose Excellence Programme is a practical demonstration of the power of the industrial internet.” said Mr Moulavasilis. “We standardize the way CT scans are performed in 57 units across 10 countries. The dose information from approximately 65,000 CT scans per month is then analysed and benchmarked to Affidea standards; often more stringent than national levels. We then optimise the radiation dose while maintaining, or even improving, image quality. This scale of medical process optimisation has never been attempted or achieved before.”

Mr Moulavasilis’ presentation distilled the complex elements of Dose Excellence to one essential concept – ‘balanced radiography’. “Diagnostic image quality must be balanced with the lowest radiation dose that is reasonably achievable,” he commented “Patients can be reassured that we take their safety seriously, and at the same time acquire uniformly high standard images”.

The Dose Excellence Project has a huge dependence on the clinical excellence of the staff involved. Dose awareness has to become a habit, and the optimisation cycle repeated. This way we are able to continuously adjust our dose reference levels downward, staying best in class.

Dose Excellence has already been rolled out to over half the CT scanners in the Affidea network and will continue to expand until the whole company is fully integrated.
